Tyrrell races to first Professional Win

The Jamega Pro Golf Tour provided the platform for Tyrrell Hatton’s first professional win, this feat accomplished at Woodcote Park that is a traditional parkland golf course with tree lined fairways and small greens set close to Croydon in South London.

It was our first visit to the course hidden away in the suburbs and what a gem it turned out to be. The first day was perfect for scoring but although not long by modern day standards Woodcote Park repelled all attempts to extract a” low one” from its tree lined fairways.

Graham Povey started to show the form of which he is capable and compiled a 3 under par 68. This was equalled by Ben Banks and they lead the way by a single shot from the chasing pack of 5 players that included Challenge Tour player Adam Gee, Trevor Jones, Tyrrell Hatton, Ryan Harrison and local hero Graham Thatcher.

To show how well the course defended itself against modern technology only 10 players managed to break par on a perfect autumn golfing day.

The second day, although bright was also breezy and that would probably take a low score out of the equation. This assumption proved to be totally wrong when James Scade came from nowhere with a course record equalling 5 under par 66 that elevated him well up into the prize fund to win £375 for a joint 7th place finish.

Martin Sell overtook Scade to assume the clubhouse lead on 2 under par adding a 68 to his first round one over par 72. Nathan Treacher and Tom Murray were the models of consistency both scoring a second one under 70 to join Sell on 2 under par.

As the final groups approached the last couple of holes it became clear that Tyrrell Hatton in the penultimate trio was going to win unless he fell over. Standing on the 18th tee leading by 2 shots, a par would do but to make sure Hatton birdied it for a second round 68 and an unassailable total of 5 under par to win by 3 shots.

In the final group neither Adam Gee or first round leaders Graham Povey and Ben Banks could get to grips with the either the conditions or the course and joined the others in a 5 way tie for second place each winning £870. A delighted Hatton won his first pro event and a welcome cheque for £5,000 to help fund his future golfing ambitions.

Woodcote Park is a delightful golf course with a traditional warm and welcoming clubhouse where you can order very reasonably priced food, which comes in very generous portions. The course is looked after by a team of dedicated green keepers, many thanks Gordon, an excellent job particularly as you’ve only recently taken over the course managers role, it was a joy to behold and play.

Do yourselves a favour and pay a visit to Woodcote Park and enjoy a complete golfing experience.

Our next event, at Mentmore, is getting busy so if you want to play please enter now as we will have a limited field due to lack of daylight.
