Maddy goes Crazy to win at Wharton Park! Cruising up the M5 towards Wharton Park in the tour van we remembered last year at
this event when the van broke down and we had to be towed to the venue.
Well, in the most bizarre of coincidences on this journey the engine overheated and we ground to a halt on the hard shoulder of the M5.
Despite pouring in copious amounts of the finest Evian Spring water into the radiator she refused to perform and so we waited for the tow truck to arrive, again!
When we finally arrived at Wharton Park we found the course in pristine condition with greens that would rival Augusta’s finest.
Sunshine and very little wind the made the course vunerable to low scoring and a 10 under prediction for round one was made by some.
Under par scores came to the recording desk at regular intervals with Nick Redfern, Jonathan Gidney, Rory Kirwan and Adam Chamberlain presenting the scorers with excellent 4 under par 67’s.
Graham Benson, Graham Povey and the big hitting former U.S Tour member James Mclean got a bit nearer to the elusive 10 under prediction by posting 5 under par 65’s.
However it was Paul Maddy who was going crazy with birdie fever on the course and got the nearest to the predicted score with a brilliant 8 under score of 63.
The temperature rose and the wind dropped at the start of day two and we all wondered what score would win at the end of the day.
Steve Courtney was the first to show and after a pedestrian first round of level par Courtney scorched round the benign Wharton Park in a great score of 7 under par 64 to race up the leader board and harbour thoughts of a possible win.
James Busby was to dash Courtney’s hopes of a first win on the tour by adding a tremendous 6 under 65 to his first round 69 to finish on 8 under par.
Rory Kirwan, Vale of Glamorgan winner, added a solid 3 under par 68 to his first round to join Courtney on 7 under and a share of third place each of them winning £1,600.
In the end it all rested on the final 3 ball of Graham Povey, James Mclean and first round leader Paul Maddy as to whether any of them could dislodge Busby from the top of the tree.
Both Mclean and Povey posted 1 under par 70’s to fall short of the lead but Maddy looked to be heading for a nervy finish standing at 9 under par on the 17th tee.
However he drew on his experience and proceeded to birdie the 17th to hold a comfortable 2 shot lead playing the last.
A now relaxed Maddy marched down the fairway and made a final birdie to finish on a fantastic 11 under par to deliver the final coup de grace to Busby’s hopes of winning.
The £3,000 cheque for second place cheered Busby up somewhat but it was Paul Maddy, the happiest of them all pocketing the winners cheque for £5,000.
The greens are a testament to the skill of the green staff and just like last year, many, many compliments from our professionals, very rare indeed……..just perfect.
Wharton Park Golf Club, near Bewdley, is a friendly place to play golf and all the staff and management go out of their way to make it an enjoyable experience for all and the food is good as well!
“Fancy seeing you here again”, said the tow truck driver. Didn’t you break down here last year? The reply, I am afraid, is un-printable!
Safe to say that we are now getting very busy and events are filling up fast so if you want to play you had best enter today.
