Kinnear loves The Woods
Paul Kinnear registered his second Jamega Pro Golf Tour win at Studley Wood in Oxfordshire and with his first win being at Park Wood GC in Kent, perhaps there is a lumberjack or two lurking in his family tree!
In the end Kinnear won comfortably with an 8 under par total for a 2-shot win, compiled in very trying conditions.
Due to a biblically bad weather forecast for the first day of the tournament at Studley Wood it was decided to complete the day as quickly as possible so rather unusually it was decided to have a shotgun start.
This made life difficult for the green staff but they came through with flying colours to get the course ready for the 109 players and play commenced at 09:30.
On an extremely windy day the scoring was excellent and it was Liverpudlian Paul Kinnear (Formby GC) who led the way with a magnificent 6 under par 67 which gave him a one-shot lead over Billy Spooner (Woodhall Spa) and Jamie Abbott (Stoke by Nayland).
Thirty-Three players either bettered par or equalled it on an extremely hard day for scoring and the second day forecast looked to be just as challenging for the players.
Well, what a difference a day makes, with lighter winds and sunshine play commenced at 07:30 and with everyone in a brighter frame of mind, we looked forward to an exciting days play.
Kinnear played faultless golf to get to 9 under par after 10 holes and looked extremely comfortable in the heat of battle until a slight stutter with bogeys on the thirteenth and fourteenth brought him back to the chasing pack.
Several players in the final groups mounted charges but they seemed to fizzle out, although Michael O’Connor did finish Eagle, Birdie to set a target of 5 under par for the remaining groups to challenge.
In the penultimate group, Dave Coupland and James Allan joined O’Connor on 5 under but Hugo Dobson birdied the par 5 last to leapfrog into the clubhouse lead on 6 under par.
In the final group pairings Abbott and Spooner had fallen away from contention and it was a relieved Kinnear who holed out for par and a 2 Shot win which also won him the £3,500 first prize.
A massive thank you for everyone at Studley Wood, especially the greens staff, for enabling the tournament to be completed and we hope to be back again next year.
