Big Win for Sam Edwards [UPDATED - GALLERY ADDED]

Sam Edwards, Jamega Tour's Essendon EventSam Edwards, from Bigbury Golf club in Devon, was delighted to have won his first professional tournament over the Essendon Old Course after a one hole play-off against Tomasz Anderson yesterday.

In the first round Anderson led on 5 under par alongside Jamie Moul with Simon Griffiths and Sam Boyes tucked in behind on 4 under.

Five players on 3 under par, including the eventual winner Edwards, led the chasing pack into the second day.

Edwards made his intentions clears as he raced to the turn in 3 under par and after turning for home really put his foot down and found 5 more birdies on the back nine, to post a flawless 8 under par 64 and set the clubhouse target of 11 under par.

Sam Buss was trading blow for blow with Edwards and with the pair level pegging with 3 holes to play it was looking like they would dead heat for a play-off, but then Buss bogeyed the sixteenth to give Edwards the edge he needed.

Tomasz Anderson seemed to be cruising to a comfortable win when he reached 13 under par with 5 holes left to play but then he bogeyed the fourteenth and fifteenth to be tied with Edwards, who was patiently waiting in the clubhouse, just in case.

Anderson regained his composure and parred the remaining 3 holes and join Edwards on 11 under par and prepare for a sudden death play-off.

The play-off started on the par 3 eighteenth and Anderson, who was first to go, came up some 18 feet short of the flag and then Edwards delivered the “coup de gras” when he put his tee shot some 18 inches from the hole.

Anderson just missed his birdie effort and tapped in for par which left Edwards with his short putt for victory which he duly holed for his first professional win and a cheque for £3,500, which will make his journey home to Devon a little easier.

All the players were very complimentary about the condition of the greens and the course in general and with a fine selection of reasonably priced food available in the clubhouse it is certainly recommended to all golfers.
