It’s a Breeze for Abbott

Jamie Abbott WychwoodJamie Abbott completed a “hat trick” of consecutive wins at The Wychwood conquering the very windy conditions to finish on 4 under par and win by 3 shots from David Dixon and Dale Whitnell.

Despite the wind and rain the first day saw Sam Whitehead post an impressive 4 under par to establish a 2-shot lead over the eventual winner, Abbott and James Willis but with a closely packed field behind them it was difficult to predict who would emerge victorious.

The second day had all the hallmarks of being a wash-out with heavy rain driven by gale force winds sweeping over the course making the scheduled start literally, a non-starter!

After the rain abated It was decided to try and complete the second round with a “shotgun” start at 1:30pm and thanks to the heroic efforts of the green staff, who worked tirelessly to get the course playable, the second round got under way as scheduled.

The leaders were apportioned their starts on the first hole and so play began but it was going to be difficult to monitor who was doing what because of the staggered start.

But as the afternoon play developed it looked like Whitehead was getting blown away by the extremely windy conditions that prevailed throughout the day and played himself out of the picture dropping 6 shots over the front nine holes.

In the same group, Abbott was faring better, dropping just 2 shots to par and hitting the turn in 37 to maintain his chances of a third win in as many weeks.

The second nine holes proved to be pivotal for Abbott when he birdied four of the first seven holes to pretty much cement his victory and although a bogey on the seventeenth halted his run a final birdie made him the certain winner.

Although Dixon and Whitnell gave chase throughout the afternoon it seems that Abbott has found the golfing “Eldorado” and seems unstoppable at the moment.

The final few words about The Wychwood, are that the staff who run the club and the green staff who nurture the course with such loving care and attention are brilliant and if you are looking to join a friendly golf club, with a superb course to play, look no further.
