Surry returns to the Winners Enclosure [UPDATED - GALLERY ADDED]

Steve Surry - Royal AscotSteve Surry returned to the winner’s rostrum after some 3 years to claim a well-deserved cheque for £3,500 for his win at Royal Ascot this week.

The first-round lead was held jointly by Jay Taylor and Nick Newbold, who both scored impressive 5 under par 65’s to lead Sam Buss and the eventual winner, Surry by a single shot.

The second day proved more challenging with a strong wind testing both the player’s skill and patience to the full.

Dale Whitnell defied the difficult playing conditions and returned a 5 under par 65 to post a total of 3 under par and that score led for quite some time until he was joined by Greg Blainey, who added a level par 70 to his first round of 3 under par.

In the penultimate group, Surry compiled a boring but very effective card of 17 pars and a single birdie to leapfrog Blainey and Whitnell and set the bar at 5 under par.

In the final group things were not going well for the first-round leaders, Taylor and Newbold, they spent the day dropping shots and both eventually fell away to claim the minor places.

This all left Surry as a deserved winner by 2 shots and we hope that he can use this experience to go on to bigger and better things in the very near future.

A deserved mention for Ben Loughrey, with the best score of the day 6 under par, an excellent achievement in very windy conditions.

Royal Ascot Golf Course was a joy to behold and with the fast and true greens, framed by beautifully maintained fairways, it is a hidden gem set next to the racecourse and it is well worth a visit.

All the management and staff at Royal Ascot were as always, friendly and willing to help especially the General Manager, Alison Hall, her catering staff who provided excellent food to satisfy the largest of appetites.

We must not forget the green staff, headed up by Ian Hockley who went the extra mile for us again to produce a course which the players were very complimentary about.

We head off to Magnolia Park near Thame next which also has a Pro-Am preceding it on the Sunday, a few team spaces still available, sign-up soon for a great day.
