A Bumper Week for Abbott
Jamie Abbott came from 4 shots back to win at the Isle of Purbeck and in doing so also won the Mini Order of Merit prize that clinched him a Free season on the 2016/2017 Algarve Pro Golf Tour.
We were delighted to be at the picturesque Isle of Purbeck Golf Club, which is set on the south coast near Swanage, just across the water from Bournemouth and ranks amongst the top 100 courses in England.
The Club dates back to 1892, and among the past owners, who were responsible for the extension to 27 holes, were Enid Blyton, the legendary writer of children’s books, and her husband, Dr Darrell-Waters.
On a tough first day, Sam Robertshawe found a way to battle through the strong winds that swept over the splendid Isle of Purbeck course to score a fine 3 under par 67 and establish an impressive 4 shot lead over Jamie Abbott.
Jamie Milligan and Mike Searle lay a further stroke back from Abbott but they all had work to do in order to catch Robertshawe.
The second day was to present further challenges for the players, with strong winds and an unseasonable chill in the air, only the toughest would survive this strict examination of their golfing game.
Michael Watson improved upon his first round 7 over par 77 with a level par 70 to set the early pace on 7 over par for the tournament.
Martin Sell, in the penultimate group, redeemed himself after his first round 73 with a brilliant 3 under par 67 that set the clubhouse lead at level par, which, given the conditions, would be hard to beat.
It was going to be an apprehensive wait for Sell until the final group appeared before he knew whether he had won, lost or was in a play-off situation.
With the final group now in it was a delighted Jamie Abbott who, with a birdie on the final hole, pipped Sell to win by a single shot but unfortunately first round leader Robertshawe had a miserable day that saw him finish in third place.
Our further congratulations go to Jamie Abbott who has also won the second of the “Famous Five” Mini Order of Merits on offer this year and he gets a free season of entry fees on the 2016/2017 Algarve Pro Golf Tour.
The third Mini Order of Merit starts next week at Luton Hoo and is your chance to win this brilliant prize worth over £4,000.
A visit to The Isle of Purbeck is a must for all golfers; the beginner is catered for on the 9-hole Dene course and the Purbeck Championship course proves an exciting test for even the most accomplished player.
The courses are built on heathland and are set within a nature reserve where many rare plants can be seen as well as rare birds. The restaurant has a well-deserved reputation for excellent food and is very good value.
