Home Win for Pugh

Rhys PughWelshman Rhys Pugh secured his first professional win over the Machynys Peninsula course on the Gower coast in the most dreadful weather conditions imaginable.

The first day at Machynys Peninsula golf club produced two amazing scores that stood head and shoulders above the rest of the field.

Martin Sell and two-time Walker Cupper Rhys Pugh, both shot 4 under par 68's which in itself may not seem very remarkable except when the wind blows hard over this tough Nicklaus design course, that measures over 7,100 yards, it turns into a beast.

Recent winner at nearby Ashburnham, Richard Bentham, staggered through the front nine holes in an uncharacteristic 4 over par forty but turned things around on the back nine coming home in a blistering 6 under par thirty to sit just 2 shots behind the joint leaders, Sell and Pugh.

Tom Speyer and James Adams headed up the chasing pack on one over par but given the forecasted conditions due to prevail on the second day it would be difficult for any of the pack to catch the leaders.

The second day lived up to the forecast and the players were battered by snow, hail, rain and increasingly high winds.

But this did not seem to bother Pugh who seemed impervious to the elements and added a 3 under par 69 to his first round 4 under 68 to win by an impressive 7 shots from Sell who finished second on level par.

Richard Bentham leads the first of Five Mini Order of Merits going into the final counting tournament at Essendon next week and even though it is still mathematically possible for Bentham to be caught he looks favourite to win the Free 2016/2017 season on the Algarve Pro Golf Tour.

The second Mini Order of Merit starts at Magnolia Park on the 9th of May and will give another player who can perform consistently over four tournaments the chance to win a prize worth in excess of £4,000.

Apart from the weather it was a delight to come back to Machynys Peninsula Golf Club and we would recommend golfers of all standards to come and sample the delights it has to offer.
