2012 Winter Series Round-up

We started the whirlwind Winter Tour Series at The Bedford Golf Club, the scene of last years amazing 13 under par 59 by Simon Lilly. No such heroics this time although European Tour player Daniel Gaunt took the spoils with a fine 6 under par 66 culminating with a great birdie on the last to win by a single stroke from Challenge Tour regular Dan Brooks. Simon Lilly had to settle for a share of 4th place this time with a creditable 4 under par 68. After their rounds, Ryder Cup and European Tour player Paul Broadhurst and newly qualified European Tour member Andrew Johnston gave freely of their time to pass on some tips and advice to 3 up and coming junior members of The Bedford.

Foggy Frilford was our next port of call and without some lateral thinking we would have lost the tournament. It was decided that we would use a shotgun start for the 21 groups and it worked a treat, the sun came out and bathed the course in warm Spring sunshine and with everyone in the house in 4 and a half hours it ended up being a successful day. The final result was a tie on 5 under par between Red Golf Managements Tom Haylock and Worksop’s Ryan Brown.

As Frilford was very foggy our next port of call, High Post, was very, very windy. Although short by modern day standards High Post can be tricky to navigate and when you factor in a 40 knot wind it becomes very tricky. This was reflected in the scoring with High Post maintaining her modesty by not having par breached by a small but high quality field. Level par it was then by Luke Joy and Lee James that shared the spoils each winning £800. After his round Lee James, a former winner of The Amateur Championship gave some junior members of High Post a few tips on how to play the game.

Onto Aldwickbury Park for the penultimate event and the weather came through for us and without any dramas Red Golf Management’s Nick Pateman set the early target at 3 under par. This was to be the mark for the rest of the day with only Mega Yacht Solutions Neil O’Briain coming close with a solid 2 under par effort to take second place to win £700 leaving Pateman to pocket the winners cheque for £1,000.

Almost without pausing for breath we arrived at Studley Wood for the last of the series and again fog was there to welcome us. However right on cue the fog lifted and we were able to start on time and complete play without further ado. Martin Sell extracted a 5 under par winning score from a fairly benign Studley Wood to win by a shot from Stephen Cronin, Mickael Fox and the Aussie invader Nigel Lane.

A very big thank you to all the courses we used for the winter series and also our special thanks to the guys who put their trust in us and played the series.
